Second Hawley bank planned
By ROY A. JONES II Regional Editor
HAWLEY - After making do without a local bank for nearly 70
years, residents of Hawley will soon have not one, but two.
Hawley civic leaders and officials of Hamlin National Bank
broke ground Monday for the Hawley Banking Center. It will be
located on a full city block fronting FM 1082, just east of U.S.
83-277.
Earth-moving equipment began preparing the site as soon as
the ceremonial shovels of earth were turned. Hamlin National Bank
Executive Vice President Gary Ford said the branch is due to be
completed around March 1.
It was just six days ago that many of the same civic leaders
joined officials of First National Bank of Anson in breaking ground
for the First National Bank of Hawley. It will be one block west
of City Hall, opening about May.
Hawley has been without a bank since 1929, when its First National
Bank failed during the Great Depression.
Ford said the Hamlin Banking Center will be of tan brick and
metal roof construction. It will feature one commercial and two
remote drive-in lanes, plus an automated teller machine. The interior
will house a spacious lobby, four offices, five teller stations
and a safe deposit box area.
"Hawley and the surrounding area have begun to grow in
recent years, as evidenced by growth in the Hawley school system,
which might jump to 3A classification within the next four years,"
Ford said. "We like what we see in Hawley - community spirit,
caring neighbors, and a desire to build a better future."
