Big cattle slated for Haskell this Saturday

By J.T. Smith / Abilene Reporter-News

If you're looking for some cattle before most folks break for the Thanksgiving holiday period, you don't want to miss the Special Consignment Sale at Haskell Livestock Auction this weekend.

Tomorrow's special auction will be held in conjunction with the regular Saturday sale and gets under way about 1 p.m.

Consignments include 150 cows ranging from 3 to 6 years old, with some pairs, heavy bred and light bred females.

These cows have been running with Charolais and Limousin bulls.

Auction owner Gary Tate said the offering also will include 100 crossbred yearlings ranging from 500 to 600 pounds.

The sale also features 70 crossbred cows 3 to 6 years old. This includes 40 cow-calf pairs and 30 heavy bred cows. These cows also have been running with Charolais and Limousin bulls.

If you need some good cows, Haskell is the place to be tomorrow.

Comanche County Pecan Show is Dec. 8

The Comanche County Extension Program Council has planned the Comanche County Pecan Show for 2 p.m. Dec. 8 at the Community Center in Comanche.

Pecan entry forms and rules are available at the extension office.

Entries will be accepted from pecan growers in Comanche County, including homeowners with pecan trees.

Pecans must be delivered to either the extension office in Comanche or Farley Farm Supply in De Leon no later than 5 p.m. Dec. 5. A pecan entry must have a minimum of 50 nuts, labeled in one variety name, with the exhibitor's name, address and phone number on the entry.

Growers are limited to one entry of each variety, but there is no limit on the number of entries of seedling or native pecans.

All pecans must have been grown in Comanche County during 1997 by the exhibitor.

Cotton crop continues to roll

In addition to the immediate Abilene area, the cotton harvest to the south is good this year -- especially in the San Angelo area.

Tom Green County Extension Agent Jeff Ripley says while some much-needed moisture delayed the cotton harvest for a few days last week, harvest is far ahead of usual.

"More cotton has been harvested by this stage than in most years," Ripley reported. "The harvest this season has been exceptional."

In this area, CEA Justin Hansard says the cotton harvest in Fisher County continues rapidly on sunny days. This is one of the better crops in the Roby and Rotan area in some years.

Todd Vineyard of Anson says the rain temporarily stopped cotton harvest in Jones County, but the small wheat got a boost from the moisture.

Some places in Jones County caught from about a half-inch to an inch of rain in last week's general precipitation.
