mbmg
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) -- Zerle L. Carpenter, director
of the Texas Agricultural Extension Service for the last 15 years,
is retiring.
Barry Thompson, chancellor of the Texas A&M University
System, made the announcement Thursday at an A&M Board of
Regents meeting. Carpenter's last official day will be Dec. 31.
The Texas Agricultural Extension Service is the largest in
the country. It provides agricultural information and education
through agents in Texas' 254 counties.
Carpenter, 62, has been with A&M for 35 years, starting
as an animal and meat science professor. He went on to head the
animal science department before being named director of the extension
service.
One of Carpenter's major contributions was establishing issue-based
extension programming in 1985. Through it, local citizens were
involved in planning and developing local extension education
programs.
