Retirement party

Just-retired Callahan County Extension Agent Greg Gerngross will be honored with a retirement party from 7-9 p.m. April 26 at the Baird Activity Center.

Gerngross spent 28 years of his 30-year Extension Service career in Callahan County.

Feel free to bring memorable pictures or a favorite story or event from Greg's career for an album that will be made for him.

With the thousands of folks Gerngross has known - old and young - there should be ample stories from this dedicated county agent's distinguished career.

90th birthday

Speaking of parties, J. Paul Turner plans to celebrate his 90th birthday for two days.

Mr. Turner will turn 90 on May 8.

But he plans to party hardy with friends and relatives for two days May 10-11 at Sears Heritage Place at 1250 E.N. 10th in Abilene.

The celebration is 1-4 p.m. each day. No gifts, please.

Mr. Turner is well known to many in the Hereford and cattle industry for the ranching operation he built at Sweetwater as part of a pioneer West Texas family.

He's still a real dapper gent, and loves to see his friends.

Stenholm receives honor

U.S. Rep. Charles Stenholm has been inducted into the Academy of Honor in Agricultural Credit by the Farm Credit Bank of Texas (FCBT).

Created in 1968, the academy recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the field of ag finance.

This is the highest honor the bank gives.

The award establishes the "1997 Charles Stenholm Academy of Honor in Agricultural Credit Scholarship." Stenholm will select a college or university which offers a graduate degree in agricultural finance, agribusiness, or ag economics to receive a $3,000 scholarship.

This selected school will then name a student recipient.
