Boll weevil program slated to get $10-million
boost today
By J.T. SMITH / Abilene Reporter-News
Officials from the USDA Farm Service Agency in Washington,
D.C., should arrive in Abilene this morning with tidings of comfort
and joy for the Texas Boll Weevil Eradication Program.
The USDA leaders are scheduled to sign low-interest loans of
$10 million at the Texas Boll Weevil Eradication Foundation state
headquarters.
Lindy Patton, state executive director for the TBWEF, said
U.S. Rep. Charles Stenholm was a key player in securing the money.
The money will be used for the statewide eradication effort.
Through this loan program, USDA is able to provide terms and
interest rates which allow cotton producers the opportunity to
pay lower assessments in their effort to eliminate the destructive
boll weevil.
This is the second time the Texas weevil program has received
a big shot-in-the-arm this year.
Washington officials had met with the TBWEF in Abilene on July
14 to present a FSA loan of $25 million in federal assistance
to the program.
That same day, three Production Credit Association offices
and the Farm Credit Bank of Texas also met with TBWEF and made
loans totaling $29.4 million for the program.
Those loans were originated by the Texas PCA in San Angelo,
with participation from the Rolling Plains PCA in Stamford and
Wichita Falls PCA. The Farm Credit Bank of Texas is involved in
the overlines and service of that loan.
