AUSTIN (AP) - If the Dallas Cowboys had only one workout a day, Darren
Benson's stock would be higher with coach Barry Switzer.
Switzer praised the defensive tackle after Tuesday morning's workout, saying
it was the best he had ever seen Benson look.
But after the afternoon session in Austin's heat, Switzer was shaking his
head and said the player was not in shape. Benson is competing for the fourth
tackle spot behind Leon Lett, Chad Hennings and tony Casillas.
Cowboys offensive guard Larry Allen is a new father. He returned to practice
Tuesday after missing three sessions to be with his wife. They have a son,
Larry Christopher Allen the third.
The child was born about a month early, but with no apparent complications.
Former Dallas Cowboys defensive back Thomas Everett was due in Cowboys
camp today.
The Cowboys are interested in signing him again, but only marginally so.
They're concerned about Everett's recent knee and shoulder problems.
The Cowboys want their team physicians to examine Everett.
Dallas has depth problems at safety because Roger Harper underwent surgery
this week for a fractured right forearm. Harper probably is out for two
months.
The Cowboys are giving a hint of how they plan to use newly acquired
running back Herschel Walker.
Tuesday, he was able twice to get inside a linebacker on single coverage,
turning a short pass over the middle into a long gain.
The idea is to get the ball to Walker going upfield against a linebacker.
More than 20,000 fans have watched the Cowboys work out in their first
week of preseason practice.
Tuesday's attendance was 1,700 for the morning workout and 1,500 for the
afternoon workout.
There has been no playing time for seven regulars this summer.
Michael Irvin is away from training camp to let his drug scandal case settle
down.
Tony Tolert and Charles Haley, defensive ends, have yet to don pads.
Tight end Jay Nocacek, center Ray Donaldson, cornerback Kevin Smith and
offensive tackle Erik Williams also have been held out.
Guard Larry Allen has played but had been missing from camp awaiting the
birth of his child.
