Man gets probation for fatal drunk driving
accident
A judge ordered eight years probation Tuesday for an Abilene
man involved in a deadly drunken-driving accident last year.
David Lee Chambers, 21, pleaded guilty last month to intoxication
manslaughter for the death of 39-year-old Guadalupe Flores Diaz
on Nov. 10, 1996.
Diaz was killed when the car in which she was riding was struck
by Chambers' 1995 Dodge after Chambers ran a red light at the
intersection of Pioneer and South First, police said.
The collision caused the driver of Diaz's vehicle to slam into
a third car, injuring both drivers. Court documents show Chambers,
who also was injured, had a blood-alcohol level of .10, the standard
at which a driver is considered legally drunk.
In addition to probation, state District Judge Jess Holloway
ordered Chambers to pay a $2,000 fine. He also suspended Chambers'
driver's license for two years and ordered an interlock device
for his vehicle for another two years.
An interlock device prevents a car from starting if alcohol
is detected on the driver's breath.
Justice of the Peace Rex Andrew, an advocate of interlocks
who has tried to require all DWI defendants to install the devices,
has in the past accused Holloway of opposing their use.
