TV Viewing (Dec. 31): Reptile marathon

NEW YORK - Have a cold-blooded New Year's Eve with the Discovery Channel's reptile marathon. From 6 p.m. to 2 a.m., the network will present specials on one crawling, slithering, snapping and venomous creature after another. The schedule is as follows: "Venomous Australians" (no, it's not about Rupert Murdoch) at 6 p.m., "Cobras" (7 p.m.), "Crocodile Territory" (8 p.m.), "The Komodo Dragons" (9 p.m.), "Subtle as a Serpent" (10 p.m.), "Crocodiles" (11 p.m.), "Hunters: Eye of the Serpent" (midnight) and "Hunters: Dawn of the Dragons" (1 a.m.).

- Fox goes live from Las Vegas for "When New Years Eve Attacks" (10 p.m.), with performances from musical artists Third Eye Blind, Chumbawamba and Sugar Ray.

- In keeping with tradition, Jay Leno will host a live episode of "The Tonight Show"(b (10:35 p.m., NBC) with guests comedian Carrot Top, rock legend Little Richard and a performance by Tap Dogs. Comedian John Leguizamo will cover New Year's Eve festivities live from New York's Time Square. Jay's wife, Mavis, will also join the fun.

- "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve '98" (10:35 p.m., ABC) promises performances by the Spice Girls, Hanson, Usher, Shawn Colvin, KC and the Sunshine Band, and the Squirrel Nut Zippers. For those who wish to stay up well into 1998, there is "After New Year's Eve" (midnight, ABC) with David Sanborn and his All-Star Band. Happy New Year.

Tonight's other highlights

- Syracuse takes on Kansas State in the <B>Fiesta Bowl<B> (6 p.m., CBS) live from Tempe, Ariz.

- How close are we to a deadly cosmic collision? Find out on the repeat of the National Geographic special "Asteroids: Deadly Impact" (7 p.m., NBC, TV-G).

- A mysterious circus comes to a small town in the turn of the century America. Dreams come true at an awful price as Jason Robards and Jonathan Price star in "Something Wicked This Way Comes" (7 p.m., Fox, TV-PG, V), the 1983 thriller based on the story by Ray Bradbury.

- Scheduled on "PrimeTime Live" (9 p.m., ABC): a look back at the top stories covered in 1997.

- The investigation into the death of a faded cover girl uncovers some ugly secrets on a repeat of "Law & Order" (9 p.m., NBC, TV-PG).

Cult choice

- There have been better actresses and bigger stars, but none so deserving of a major made-for-TV scandal-rama as Elizabeth Taylor. Sherilyn Fenn stars in "Liz: The Elizabeth Taylor Story" (7 p.m., Lifetime) based on the thoroughly unauthorized biography.

Series notes

- All are repeats ... Mike's ex-girlfriend (Daphne Zuniga) wants to bear his child on "Spin City" (7 p.m., ABC, TV-PG) ... Dharma tries to ease Greg's stress level with yoga on "Dharma & Greg" (7:30 p.m., ABC, TV-PG).

Mary thinks Dick may be a former '60s radical in hiding on "3rd Rock From the Sun" (8 p.m., NBC, TV-PG) ... Drew tries to buy his old house back at auction on "The Drew Carey Show" (8 p.m., ABC, TV-PG).

Ellen has trouble with the word "roommate" on "Ellen" (8:30 p.m., ABC, TV-14) ... Matt may be too industrious for his own good on "Working" (8:30 p.m., NBC, TV-PG).

Comedian Molly Shannon and actor Jeff Garlin are scheduled on "Late Night With Conan O'Brien" (11:35 p.m., NBC) ... Actress Faye Dunaway and author Steven Stark are on "The Late, Late Show With Tom Snyder" (12:37 a.m., CBS).
