Squirrel terrorizes postman

By CRISSIE MCMENNAMY
Pasadena Citizen

PASADENA - Bad weather, mean dogs and other demons have never stopped Earl Ross from doing his job as a mail carrier. A flying squirrel, however, has stopped him in his tracks.

Ross has never actually seen his nemesis. The stories are enough to scare him away.

One man claims the squirrel killed his dog. Another claims the animal jumped two children, forcing them to be treated for rabies.

The U.S. Postal Service has backed up Ross' fears. He hasn't delivered the mail to two squirrel-stalked houses since Thursday.

"We're not exactly sure what's happening out there, but if a carrier feels he is in danger he doesn't have to deliver the mail," said James Joseph, the carrier's supervisor.

Ada Fisher, who lives in one of the two mail-less houses, said: "This is no reason to not deliver the mail."

"I don't think it's dangerous or anything," she said, "although it did bite my sister-in-law and it bit my husband when he was trying to get it off of her."

Local animal control officers call the fear "pure bunk," adding that the squirrel is probably nesting and would attack only to protect her young.
