Grateful for the visit
Whether Gov. George W. Bush succeeded in increasing support
for his property tax relief proposal by his appearance in Abilene
Tuesday remains to be seen.
But Abilenians are grateful for his visit here - for his willingness
to go before the public in person instead of hiding in his Austin
residence and for including Abilene as one of the spots to make
a personal appearance and appeal.
Including Abilene in a statewide debate hasn't always been
the standard operating procedure for Texas governors in the past.
That Bush cared enough about what Abilenians think to come here
himself to explain and defend his proposal is a gesture of openness
and acknowledgement that will be long remembered by local taxpayers
and voters.
