New city attorney search
It has been a long time since Abilene city officials had to
give much attention to the qualities they wanted in a city attorney.
But the departure of 20-year veteran Harvey Cargill for College
Station provides an opportunity to rethink this important position.
Cargill's tenure provided stability and historical continuity.
Undoubtedly, he knew the city and the players in it quite well.
But such a local background isn't necessarily so crucial in
a replacement. More important is a knowledge of state and federal
laws that affect municipalities and a temperament to aggressively
advocate the city's interests. Many good candidates should meet
those qualifications.
