Why readers like Munday, Anson, Abilene

People like where they live for a variety of reasons. Here are some more thoughts from readers on the subject. If you would like to participate in this forum, send your ideas about "Why I Like Where I Live" to me at P.O. Box 30, Abilene, 79604. Or e-mail me at glennd@abinews.com or fax to 915-673-1901.

Munday

How do I love Munday? Let me count the ways:

I love the Munday people. They are a loving, caring, sharing group concerned about everyone regardless of race, creed or color. When anyone needs help, the community is there.

I love the Munday churches. While we each have our different methods of worship, there is a sense of cooperation and the love of God in each of them. All the churches have beautiful modern buildings, indicating that the community cares and takes pride in our worship facilities.

I love the Munday schools. These schools have not only provided education for three generations of my family, they are a source of pride for the entire community - modern, well-maintained buildings, wonderful athletic facilities, a high ratio of children who continue their education in institutions of higher learning.

The student body not only achieves many honors in state competition in athletics, band, one-act play, debate and other UIL programs, it also continues to carry on the tradition of the past while looking to the future.

I love the Munday city government. A group of concerned citizens of all races serves in the city government with a goal of making Munday the "Best Small Town in Texas." Our town has more paved streets than most larger towns, not only in the affluent areas but in the low income area as well. We continue to update the services and beauty of the town in every way possible, while staying on a pay-as-you-go program.

Anson

Why I am glad I live in Anson:

1. For the many volunteers who truly care, who give of their time for the residents of Valley View Care Center where I am so fortunate to be employed.

2. Only one red light in town!

3. Stewart's Place still sells "Super Dogs."

4. Not having to stand in line at the post office.

5. Everybody knows everybody.

6. For folks like Sylvia Moreland, Tom Isbell and Nettie Lee who are always going that extra mile for our little town.

7. Our Jones County Courthouse.

8. I am able to be around folks I've known all of my life and truly care about, and I'm able to share this life with them as we all grow older.

Abilene

Most of the reasons I like Abilene have already been covered by others. But I want to point out some of the distinctions Abilene can boast about.

1. The only town between 100,000 and 150,000 having three full-sized universities.

2. The major home of the B-1 bomber.

3. The only town of 100,000 with a "scenic" railroad right-of-way - and with eight grade crossings where a teacher can take her class to watch the trains go by.

4. The only town of 100,000 that, if things go as planned, can claim the most successful restoration of downtown.

5. The only town with 100,000 residents that can claim a restaurant converted from a railroad depot (proposed at least).

6. The only town of 100,000 with a home-owned hardware store with competitive prices to the chain stores.

7. A rare town where honorable and respected people run for, and are elected to, public office.

EDITOR'S NOTE: I keep thinking of more reasons why I like Abilene. With the blooming of spring, I am reminded how beautiful the redbud trees are here. And the daffodils planted last fall during "Make a Difference Day" have added a delightful touch of color to the city.
