Responding to letter a bout Buddha
Dear Religion Editor:
This is in response to Sharon Norman's letter in your Aug.
30 paper. Sharon needs to check Webster's dictionary. Last time
I did, Buddhism meant a worshipper of Buddha. And, any time you
build temples and images to someone that is worshipping that person.
As for their compassion and nonjudgmental teachers, I suggest
she read Their Blood Cries Out by Paul Marshall. See what is going
on in Burma and around the world if you do not covert to Buddhism.
I also suggest she do a little checking on who has been condemned
and persecuted for the last 4,000 years, let alone 2,000.
Buddha may have lived here on earth 500 years before Jesus
was born. But, Jesus knew Buddha before he was formed in the womb
as he does all of us. Read John 1:1-3, John 1:14, I John 5-7 and
Jeremiah 1:5.
I must tell you that frankly, too, I am upset that people say
we must grow in Christ. You cannot grow in him if you don't know
where his place is. As the Son of God, he must be exalted. We
need to quit putting him on the same plane and in the same context
as pagan gods and images.
Finally as for Buddha not teaching his followers to worship
God, see II John verse 7. Carrie Cecil Coleman (Editor's Note:
In her Aug. 30 letter, Sharon Norman expressed the opinion that
"while it is true that both (Christianity and Buddhism) based
their teachings on the practice of compassion and being nonjudgmental,
Buddhists still emphasize those teachings while many Christians
seem more intent on condemning those who disagree with them about
anything...I believe the nonjudgmental nature of Buddhism is what
attracts so many people today. They are simply tired of 2,000
years of condemnation.)
