Local Religious Notes

St. Paul United Methodist Church, 525 Beech, will begin a Wednesday After School Program on Jan. 7, 1998. The program will be held from 2:30-6 p.m. and is offered to children in kindergarten through fifth grade.

The children will participate in recreation, snacks, Bible lessons, arts and crafts, music, drama, service projects, worship and tutoring. Church vans will pick up children from Valley View, Alta Vista, and College Heights Elementary Schools.

There is no charge for the program. Enrollment forms are available in the church office. For more information, call Mary Beth Foye at 672-7814.

INTERNATIONAL MISSIONS STUDY

An International Missions Study is set for 6 p.m. Sunday at University Baptist Church, 2141 Grape.

Billie and J.G. Martin will share the needs of the hungry and hurting people of the world using a video, "A Heart for the Hungry."

CHAPLAIN TO ADDRESS WOMEN'S LUNCHEON

Linda Blagg, chaplain for Hendrick Health Systems, will be guest speaker at a noon luncheon Monday at Pioneer Drive Baptist Church, 701 Pioneer.

The covered dish luncheon will be in Room 143. Drinks will be provided.

Blagg will speak on "Bee All That You Can Bee," using the bumble bee to illustrate that people can fly, even with negative circumstances.

Blagg is a family consultant for the Christian Life Commission of the Baptist General Convention of Texas in addition to her duties as chaplain at Hendrick. She also is a motivational speaker to women of all ages.

A reception from 2-4 p.m. Sunday at First United Methodist Church will honor the Rev. Lloyd Mayhew, who pastored the church from 1969-75.

Mayhew has been part-time chaplain for Sears Methodist centers for 20 years. Mayhew is a 1935 graduate of McMurry University and started his preaching career in 1935.

He and his wife of 67 years, Lila Mae, will move to Stephenville later this year to be near a daughter.

Mayhew's career began in November 1935 when he was in charge of the Blair Circuit. He later pastored a number of congregations from the Lubbock area west to Andrews and in the Abilene area. He served on the staff of St. Paul UMC in Abilene after pastoring First UMC. SPECIAL SINGERS

Heritage Baptist Church invited Abilenians to attend special services at 6 p.m. Sunday. Featured guests will be the Singing Crowe Family from the Metroplex, "Forever His Ministry."

METHODIST CONSECRATION SUNDAY

Sunday will be Consecration Sunday at St. Paul Methodist Church, N.5th and Beech.

Two special events are planned: Sunday morning worship and the 88th birthday celebration at the All-Church Birthday Celebration luncheon immediately following the service.

A teacher enrichment workshop for teachers of children's Sunday school classes will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday.

CATHOLICS AID VICTIMS IN MEXICO

Catholics of the 29 counties in the Diocese of San Angelo, which covers much of the Big Country, have contributed $8,408.59 for the victims of Hurricane Pauline on the lower Pacific coast of Mexico.

Bishop Michael D. Pfeifer appealed to the 73 churches of the Catholic diocese for assistance. MEDIA OPEN HOUSE

The Media Library of First Baptist Church, 1333 N. 3rd, will have an open house honoring volunteers from 9-11 a.m. Sunday in the library. with mug SPECIAL SPEAKER

Dr. Bob Ellis will preach at all three services Sunday at Pioneer Drive Baptist Church, 701 S. Pioneer Drive. Ellis is professor of Old Testament and Hebrew at Logsdon School of Theology at Hardin-Simmons University.

HIGH ATTENDANCE DAY

The Companerismo Varonil Sinai or Sinai Baptist Men's Fellowship is promoting "high attendance day" at Ambler Baptist Church with a supper and worship service at 6 p.m. today.

The church is located at the corner of Ambler and Park. All Hispanic men in the Big Country are invited to attend. Call 673-2725 for more information.

COMMITMENT SUNDAY

Sunday will be Commitment Sunday at First Christian Church, 1420 N. 3rd. Dan and Sandy Owen, missionaries in Africa, will share in the 10:45 a.m. worship service. An all-church luncheon will follow.

BISHOP COMING

Bishop Michael Pfeifer of the San Angelo Diocese will say mass at 11:30 a.m. Sunday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 5410 Buffalo Gap Rd.
