Moments of Grace
Early one August morning in northern Minnesota, I headed around
the lake to visit a friend, even though the sky threatened rain.
Halfway down the ancient, slippery wooden stairway to the beach
I stopped and donned by poncho, for the rain had begun with a
sudden intensity and a burst of wind that my crippled umbrella
was not able to withstand; and then, almost as suddenly, the rain
stopped.
Although I could not see it for the dark forest behind me,
the sun had risen and was shining brightly on the lake and on
the pines and spruces of the far shore. As I stood on the shore,
I looked up at the most beautiful double rainbow I have ever seen.
Bright, shimmering bands of radiant color poured into the lake
on either side, and a second bow, equally bright, curved upward
into the sky and arched down to touch the magnificent trees at
the lake's edge.
Both smiled down at their reflections in the lake, as I shivered
in the last falling drops from the storm. God held me in his hand,
promising me that all would be well.
A day or so later, my son John, who had been praying for some
time whether or not to have surgery to remove a benign brain tumor,
called to say that he had decided to have the operation.
I felt a deep sense of peace, assurance that all would be well.
Almost a year has passed since John's operation, and he has not
had a single seizure.
We thank God for giving John health and for his rainbow of
promises that encircle us.
