Palo Duro Presbytery meeting here next weekend
By LORETTA FULTON Senior Staff Writer
More than 200 people will be in Abilene next weekend for a
meeting of the Palo Duro Presbytery, which covers an area from
the Panhandle to the Big Country.
The 78th Stated Meeting, or regular session of the presbytery,
will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 4515 S. 14th,
Friday and Saturday.
"We'll have to make use of every room," said the
Rev. James J. Pitts, pastor.
Elder commissioners or delegates from 59 Presbyterian churches
and 89 ministers will gather for worship, communion and prayer,
Pitts said. With spouses and guests, Pitts said between 225 and
250 people are expected.
A major part of the meeting will be the election of an executive
pastor for the presbytery to replace the Rev. Ben McAnally of
Lubbock, who has served as interim pastor for a year and a half.
Also, on Friday from 2:30-5:30 p.m. a workshop on "Effective
Mission Interpretation in the Churches" will be held. Workshop
leader will be Dr. John Robert Hendrick, professor emeritus of
evangelism and missions at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary.
Following Friday's workshop, registration will begin at 5:30.
A meal will be served, followed by a worship session and the beginning
of the business meeting.
On Saturday, the session will reconvene at 8:30 a.m., lunch
will be served at noon and the business session will reconvene
for "as long as it takes us to do our business," Pitts
said.
The Palo Duro Presbytery, with an office in Lubbock, is the
regional governing body of the Presbyterian Church (USA).
