Youth-led service workshop Sunday
By LORETTA FULTON Senior Staff Writer
Youth-led worship services have been around since youth have
been around.
But they take planning and know-how and not all youth ministers,
where paid or volunteer, have had the proper training to pull
one off.
On Sunday, a workshop for youth leaders on how to put together
a youth-led service will be held at St. Paul United Methodist
Church, 525 Beech. It is open to all youth leaders regardless
of denomination.
The session will be from 2-4 p.m. at the church and it will
be followed at 7 p.m. by a concert by the workshop leader, Celia
Whitler, a contemporary Christian artist and author.
Cost for the workshop is $7 or $5 if a church sends more than
one person. The concert also will kick off a new contemporary
service at St. Paul that will be held on Sunday nights, said youth
leader Chris England.
The workshop "will give youth leaders many ideas on how
to incorporate scripture activities and programs in a fun and
interesting way," England said.
Whitler holds degrees in Christian education and elementary
education from Centenary College of Louisiana. She worked as a
teacher for five years before resigning to pursue music and youth
work full time. She also is author of a book titled Time to Praise.
Whitler released her first album, "Make Me Worthy,"
in 1989. Her latest was released last spring. Whitler lives with
her husband, Ron, in the Nashville area.
