Slim Willet Gets Top
KCAD Post
Slim Willet will become general manager of KCAD Radio Station in Abilene Monday, subject to approval of the Federal Communications Commission, he announced Saturday.
Willet, whose real name is Winston Moore, has been a disc jockey for the past 15 years with local radio stations and is the composer of the 1952 hit song, "Don't Let the Stars Get in Your Eyes."
He also had worked in radio prior to graduating from Hardin-Simmons University in 1949 with a degree in journalism. It was while he was at H-SU that he adopted his pseudonym of Slim Willet.
"The radio class was putting on a chapel program," he said, "and we were all using corny, assumed names. I picked Willet from the comic strip and used 'Slim' because I wasn't slim. The name stuck."
Willet said he would continue to do disc jockey work for KCAD in addition to his other duties as general manager.
"In my 15 years experience in radio, I have never had the opportunity to work on a station that plays all country music," he said. "I'm looking forward to my work with KCAD, which plays only country music."
The 500-watt station, located in Westgate Shopping Capital, was started in September, 1962. H.S. Higginbotham, owner of the station, has been doubling as general manager, so "no changes of personnel are anticipated other than the addition of Willet," Higginbotham said.
Willet (Moore) is married to the former Jimmie Crenshaw of Clyde. They reside at 817 Leggett. They have two sons, Tim Moore, 14, a student at Lincoln Junior High School, and Ted, 25, who has just completed work at Abilene Christian College toward his master's degree. Ted is married and the couple has one child.
