May 20 -- Eagles’ spring game canceled due to rain (Al Pickett) Abilene High’s Black-Gold spring football scrimmage at Shotwell Stadium was canceled Friday because of the rain. AHS coach Steve Warren said it won’t be rescheduled.

May 18 -- Local teams wind down spring drills (Jeff Walker) Abilene High barely had time to reminisce about last year’s historic football run in the post- season, and the Cooper coaches haven’t had time to see all of its players because the baseball team is still participating in its post season.

May 2 -- Football Frenzy - AHS, Cooper looking to provide encore of last season’s gridiron success (Al Pickett) Abilene High and Cooper made history last fall by becoming the first schools from the same city in District 4-5A to make the football playoffs in the same season.

Dec. 24 -- Eagles, Yellow Jackets dominate 4A-5A team (JEFF WALKER) Abilene High and Stephenville went farther in the postseason than any other Class 4A or 5A schools, and, consequently, both have landed the most players on the Abilene Reporter-News’ all-Big Country Class 4A-5A football team.

Dec. 24 -- Moser was architect of ‘Glory Years’ (TED DUNNAM) When comparing Chuck Moser to Jimmy Johnson, the similarity ends at winning big football games. And even Johnson can’t hold a candle to Moser in that department.

Dec. 20 -- Abilene High showed it could play with the best (Candy Reagan) The Abilene High Eagles were a very good football team this year, and if anyone doubts that, just take a look at the way the Class 5A state championship game ended.

Dec. 12 -- Eagles place 6, Coogs 4 on all-district team (JEFF WALKER) When the coaches and media handed out the selections for the all-District 4-5A football team, much went according to script.

Dec. 9 -- AHS grad will coach Saturday in Shotwell (Al Pickett) For the 10,000 or so Abilene High fans who made the trip down Interstate 20 the last two weeks, some may be suffering “football withdrawal” this weekend. Well, have no fear. There are several “fixes” available. And one of them even includes an ex-Eagle.

Dec. 7 -- AHS thriller shows NCAA needs playoffs (Al Pickett) Add one more to the list. Abilene High’s 45-37 heartbreaking loss Saturday to South Grand Prairie in the Class 5A Division II quarterfinals at Texas Stadium now must be added to the list of the best football games I have witnessed in person.

Dec. 6 -- AHS’ Warren made right call in going for it (Candy Reagan) Abilene High School fans will likely spend many an hour over the next few weeks sipping coffee and debating “the call.” And AHS football players will likely spend many a sleepless night reliving “the play.”

Dec. 4 -- Big plays key for high-powered Eagles, Warriors (AL PICKETT) IRVING — It is not hard to figure out why Abilene High and South Grand Prairie are two of the eight teams remaining in the Class 5A Division II football playoffs.

Dec. 3 -- Horton, Gonzales, Barnes and Wolcott overcome size with effort to give Eagles solid defensive line (JEFF WALKER) Undersized, but not undetermined — that is the best way to describe the defensive line on the Abilene High football team, which faces South Grand Prairie Saturday at 4 p.m. in the Class 5A Division II quarterfinals at Texas Stadium.

Dec. 1 -- Eagles will have to watch big plays this week (Al Pickett) New game, new problem. That’s the challenge facing the Abilene High football team this week as the Eagles prepare for Saturday’s showdown with No. 4-ranked South Grand Prairie in the Class 5A Division II quarterfinals. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. Saturday at Texas Stadium.

Nov. 26 -- Abilene High’s Beltran is just the latest among the state’s top backs to face DeSoto’s defense (JEFF WALKER) Things just aren’t getting easier for the DeSoto defense. The Fighting Eagles have met the challenge of facing some of the top running backs in the state this season.

Nov. 24 -- No holiday for Abilene High, DeSoto football teams (JEFF WALKER) There is no such thing as a holiday week when it comes to high school football playoffs. That is what both coaches are saying as Abilene High and DeSoto prepare for their Class 5A Division II regional playoff encounter Saturday at Texas Stadium beginning at 1 p.m.

Nov. 20 -- AHS faces tough back, 4-5A history (JEFF WALKER) MIDLAND — The Abilene High football team finds itself in a tough battle today when it faces El Paso Andress in the Class 5A Division II area round.

Nov. 19 -- What it takes to be a winner is a joy for AHS coach Steve Warren (Jeff Walker) The Abilene High football team has halted a 40-year drought by making the postseason this year, thanks to a strong offense, a solid defense and a reliable kicking game.

Nov. 17 -- Goodman’s passing is added part that makes AHS offense successful (JEFF WALKER) When the football season began, the Abilene High Eagles knew they were going to have a running game with Sneezy Beltran. Head coach Steve Warren also knew once the team got close enough, the kicking game gave the Eagles two dimensions with the return of Cheno Rodriguez and his solid right foot.

Nov. 14 -- ’59 Eagles were first and last (Guest editorial) I am chair of the Media Communications Dept. at Grossmont College in El Cajon, Calif., a San Diego suburb, and I was a columnist for 20 years at The San Diego Union.

Nov. 13 -- Abilene High 40, Lubbock Monterey 9: LUBBOCK - Perhaps it was an omen.

Nov. 12 -- Plainsmen bear little resemblance to team Eagles beat on Sept. 4 (AL PICKETT) LUBBOCK — It may be a stretch to call tonight’s playoff game at Jones Stadium between Abilene High and Lubbock Monterey a rematch.

Nov. 10 -- Abilene High’s Rodriguez is one of better kickers in state (JEFF WALKER) Kicking into a net got him on the Abilene High football team. But kicking through the uprights may get him a whole lot more.

Nov. 6 -- Abilene High 20, Abilene Cooper 7: Abilene High ended one drought last week and topped it off by completing the daily double Friday night in front of more than 15,000 fans at Shotwell Stadium.

Nov. 5 -- There could be a first in cross-town duel (AL PICKETT) The decade of the ’90s opened with an Abilene High victory over cross-town rival Cooper. But Cooper has dominated the series the remainder of the decade, winning the other eight meetings in the annual cross-town showdown. The Cougars lead the all-time series 27-10-1. Football Standings - District 4-5A

Nov. 5 -- Fields, Mabry live closer than most opponents (Jeff Walker) For fans and alumni, the Abilene High-Cooper football game is all about bragging rights for the next 365 days. But for two players, the bragging rights are scaled down to one city block on Greenridge Court. AHS cornerback Chris Mabry and Cooper wide receiver Casey Fields live about five houses apart on that street. (District 4-5A predictions at end of article - Ed.)

Nov. 4 -- Different roads lead Eagles, Coogs to Friday (JEFF WALKER) For one school, it’s been a steady climb. For the other, a series of peaks and vallies. Despite the different paths Abilene High and Cooper have taken this football season, both appear to be headed for the playoffs, the first time in District 4-5A history that two schools from the same city have qualified for the playoffs in the same year.

Nov. 2 -- Eagles’ Beltran, Rebels’ Benson making this a season to remember (AL PICKETT) 1999 will be remembered in District 4-5A football for more than just Abilene High ending its 40-year absence from the playoffs. This season will also be remembered as the Year of the Great Running Back Performances.

Nov. 1 -- Abilene High 35, Midland High 6: MIDLAND - The drought is over. Abilene High is headed to the playoffs for the first time since 1959, ending a 40-year reign of frustration on the north side.

Oct. 29 -- A lot has changed since Eagles’ last playoff trip (Jeff Walker) The Abilene High Eagles are on the verge of qualifying for the playoffs for the first time since 1959. A lot of things have happened in the last four decades. (Several predictions at bottom of article - Ed.)

Oct. 26 -- Abilene football fans could see history Friday (Al Pickett) This could be a history-making week in Abilene. If both the Abilene High and Cooper football teams win Friday night, both will make the Class 5A playoffs.

Oct. 23 -- Abilene High 28, Odessa High 0: Sneezy Beltran had two crowning moments Friday night at Shotwell Stadium, but neither one turned out to be the real story of Abilene High's 28-0 homecoming victory over Odessa High.

Oct. 22 -- Eagles can’t afford letdown against Broncos tonight (AL PICKETT) It’s homecoming tonight at Shotwell Stadium for Abilene High, but there is more riding on the outcome than just the crowning of the queen.

Oct. 22 -- Abilene could be first 4-5A town to have two playoff teams (Jeff Walker) History could be made this high school football season if Abilene High and Cooper continue their current trends. The Eagles and Cougars have put themselves in prime position for a run at the postseason.

Oct. 20 -- Diles increased role results in 46 carries (JEFF WALKER) At the beginning of fall workouts, Tremaine Diles’ role on the Cooper football team appeared to be the primary tailback on the junior varsity squad. But after starting varsity running backs Carl Bloom and Kyle Wiskow were sidelined with injuries, Diles became a focal point in the Cooper backfield and his days of JV football quickly ended.

Oct. 19 -- Current district rankings for AHS, CHS, & Wylie

Oct. 16 -- Midland Lee 40, Abilene High 26: MIDLAND - Cedric Benson not only tossed his name in for top player in District 4-5A, he ran it right down Abilene High's throat.

Oct. 13 -- AHS, Cooper both set up early series of plays before the first snap (AL PICKETT) Actors aren’t the only ones reading scripts these days. So are football coaches. The head football coaches at both Abilene High and Cooper script the first several plays of every football game.

Oct. 12 -- Beltran extends his assault on district records (Al Pickett) Mojo Magic got Sneezed on Friday night. In Abilene High’s 37-22 thrashing of Odessa Permian, Mojo fans found something more powerful than the Mojo Mystique that has surrounded the state’s most legendary high school football program.

Oct. 9 -- Abilene High 37, Odessa Permian 22: It wasn't even close.

Oct. 8 -- Eagles have been pointing to this game (JEFF WALKER) Many questions regarding the future of the Abilene High football team will be answered tonight when the five-week sprint for the District 4-5A title begins tonight at Shotwell Stadium against Odessa Permian.

Oct. 7 -- Richardson plays anywhere he can to help Eagles win (JEFF WALKER) He’s the jack-of-all-trades on the Abilene High football team. He is listed at 5-10, 170 pounds, which could typically be the size of a place-kicker. But that is about the only position Frankie Richardson doesn’t play for head coach Steve Warren.

Sept. 24 -- Eagles don’t see Bobcats as 0-3 team (AL PICKETT) SAN ANGELO — A year ago, Sneezy Beltran ran wild, rushing for 328 yards, as Abilene High beat San Angelo Central, 28-13.

Sept. 17 -- Trinity gives Eagles extra preparation for Permian (AL PICKETT) Abilene High will play Odessa Permian in the District 4-5A opener in three weeks. Tonight, the Eagles will get a dress rehearsal when they face unbeaten Euless Trinity, one of the top teams from the Metroplex, at Shotwell Stadium.

Sept. 15 -- Experience is key to AHS, Cooper QBs’ improvement (JEFF WALKER) They are the field generals of their respective offenses and they both have the right mentality for the position.

Sept. 10 -- Temple 21, Abilene High 14: TEMPLE - Perhaps once the District 4-5A season starts the Abilene High football team will be able to look back at Friday night's 21-14 loss to Temple as a hard lesson learned.

Sept. 10 -- AHS will see a new look from Temple (AL PICKETT) TEMPLE — Abilene High head football coach Steve Warren expects his Eagles will have the Temple Wildcats’ undivided attention tonight.

Sept. 3 -- Abilene High 14, Lubbock Monterey 3: Abilene High's defense is starting to put together a nice little streak.

Aug. 28 -- Sneezy runs wild in AHS win: AMARILLO - Abilene High's football season opener felt more like the Fourth of July than a fall classic. With game-time temperatures in the upper 90s, the Eagles and Amarillo Tascosa Rebels provided plenty of offensive fireworks at Dick Bivins Stadium, combining for 51 first-half points.
