Abilene High School Tennis

Sunday, September 9, 2001 -- Eagles take third at tennis tourney (Mark Wilson) When Quentin Walker looked off the tennis court between points, he could see about 50 sets of eyes peering right back at him.

Friday, September 7, 2001 -- Top high school tennis teams to play in Abilene (Mark Wilson) Virtually everybody who is anybody in Texas high school tennis is here this weekend for the annual Abilene Independent School District Team Tennis Tournament.

Friday, April 13, 2001 -- Three Coogs, one Eagle earn regional berths SAN ANGELO — Cooper will have three entries and Abilene High will have one when the Region I-5A tennis tournament gets under way in two weeks.

Thursday, April 12, 2001 -- Eagles’ Langston knocks off top seed SAN ANGELO — Megan Langston of Abilene High knocked off the No. 1 seed in girls singles, and the unseeded Cooper girls doubles team of Lindsay Hoefer and Pare Radillo also reached the finals Wednesday to highlight the first day of action in the District 4-5A tennis tournament.

Wednesday, April 11, 2001 -- AHS, CHS primed for district (Mark Wilson) With only a slight question in the order of seeding for the girls singles, both the Abilene High and Cooper tennis teams are primed and ready for the District 4-5A tennis tournament starting this morning at the San Angelo Central High School courts.

Saturday, April 7, 2001 -- Abilene Eagle Invitational - Clyde’s Hawk rallies for win (Mark Wilson) Ashley Hawk talks like a tennis player with something to prove.(2001 articles will be added to this directory as they develop.)

Sunday, October 29, 2000 -- AHS ousted from region tennis tourney (Brett Vito) For the first time since 1996, there was not a team from Abilene in the finals of the Region I-5A tennis tournament.

Saturday, October 28, 2000 -- Abilene High cruises into regional tennis semis (Mark Wilson) The members of the Abilene High tennis team are realizing how strong District 4-5A really is as they compete in the Region I-5A team tennis tournament that began Friday.

Tuesday, October 24, 2000 -- Eagles cruise to 4-5A tennis title; All close matches go Abilene High’s way in 17-2 rout: (Mark Wilson) After losing seven seniors to graduation last spring, Abilene High may not have been expected to be quite as strong in the 2000 team tennis season.

Wednesday, September 13, 2000 -- Eagles soar past Coogs - AHS wins district opener against crosstown rival (Mark Wilson) Even a desperately needed rainstorm couldn’t spoil Abilene High’s District 4-5A team tennis season opener.

Saturday, September 9, 2000 -- AHS continues amazing tourney run - Cougars join Eagles in semis with 10-5 victory (Jeff Walker) Abilene High really likes the Abilene Independent School District Tournament. And with a streak like the Eagles ran off, who wouldn’t?

Friday, September 8, 2000 -- Tourney propels teams into district play (Jeff Walker) Team tennis is no different than any other sport. Coaches use the non-district season to prepare for the district campaign.

April 24 -- Net profit - Local players’ high school success has shifted to college for No. 7 Abilene Christian University women (Ted Dunnam) The constant lineup changes, match-to-match reshuffling, players not knowing where they’re playing. Will anything work for the Abilene Christian University women’s tennis team? Uh, excuse me. It already is.

April 7 -- Few sure bets are featured in District 4-5A tourney (Ted Dunnam) Just call the District 4-5A tennis tournament a parity case. Four wide open draws, no dominant players and there may not be a 4-5A representative qualify for the state tournament.

April 2 -- Coogs claim overall team title (Mark Wilson) Cooper won both the C Division and the overall team title Saturday in the Abilene Eagle Invitational tennis tournament, while Abilene High’s Beau Cox nailed down the boys A Division singles crown.

April 1 -- Eagles’ Cox reaches A singles final (Mark Wilson) Overall, Friday’s play may not have been the best exhibition of tennis ever for Abilene High — or even close — but the Eagles can at least look ahead to next weekend’s District 4-5A tournament.

March 5 -- Cooper tennis tournament: Eagles’ Cox soars to crown (TED DUNNAM) Beaux Cox won’t remain an underdog too much longer if he keeps up this kind of stuff.

March 4 -- Cox, Cooper contingent move into semis with easy wins (TED DUNNAM) Judging by the results of Beau Cox’s matches Friday, it’s little wonder the Abilene High tennis player has won two tennis titles this year.

Nov. 15 -- Tennis Corner - Heart led to Eagles’ state title (Rick Meyers) Heart. When the score is close, in any competition, and the talent of the competitors is close, the team with the most heart will be the victor. Such was the case last week at the high school state team tennis tournament.

Nov. 7 -- Eagles claim title with close win over Westlake (MICHAEL EDDLEMAN) LAKEWAY — Cool, calm, and collected appeared to be the motto of the Abilene Eagles Saturday. Despite being tied at six with seven matches still on the court, the Eagles’ determination and calm under pressure helped them to seal the victory, 10-8 over Austin Westlake and win the state Class 5A team tennis title.

Nov. 3 -- Top-ranked Abilene High will be the favorite this weekend at state team tennis tournament (TED DUNNAM) The only problem now facing the Abilene High tennis team is whether it will trip over its own feet. This past Saturday, Class 5A’s No. 1-ranked team, the Eagles, defeated the state’s No. 2 and No. 3 teams in Lubbock Coronado and El Paso Coronado in the Region I-5A team tennis tournament.

Oct. 31 -- No. 1 Eagles off to Austin (MARK WILSON) The Abilene High tennis team had no mercy for El Paso Coronado, or for their own head coach.

Oct. 30 -- Eagles, Cougars breeze into regional semifinals (TED DUNNAM) Had either Cooper or Abilene High needed a second wind Friday, it was definitely available on an extremely blustery day in the Region I-5A tennis tournament.

Oct. 29 -- AHS looks for trip to state tournament (TED DUNNAM) What Abilene High narrowly missed a season ago, it will try to secure today and Saturday. The state’s No. 1-ranked team will attempt to earn a trip to the state team tennis tournament when the Region I-5A tournament unfolds this weekend at various courts in Abilene. However, the Eagles won’t be without their challengers, and one of them will be cross-town rival Cooper.

Oct. 27 -- AHS tennis team enters region tourney as No.1 team in state (TED DUNNAM) Now that the shoe is on the other foot, Cooper is fit to be tied. The reason? Sole survival.

Sept. 20 -- AHS, CHS tennis teams looking tough (Rick Meyers) Last week’s tennis match between Abilene High and Cooper was a joy to watch. Even though the final score was 14-5 most of the individual matches were very close.

Sept. 11 -- Eagles perfect; Coogs fall in close match (TED DUNNAM): While Abilene High was winning 38 games without a loss Friday, Cooper was wearing itself out in the Abilene Independent School District team tennis tournament.
