Video shows abused nursing home resident
VICTORIA, Texas (AP) - An aide at a nursing home remained jailed
in lieu of $25,000 bond Friday after officials viewed a secretly
recorded videotape of a patient allegedly being poked with a hanger
and spat upon.
KAVU-TV reported that the black-and-white video showed Daisy
Nichols, 80, who has Alzheimer's disease, being violently shoved
and jabbed as her bedding was changed at Linwood Place Nursing
Home.
Della Reese Huff, 32, was charged with felony injury to an
elderly person. Justice of the Peace Beatriz Gonzales on Wednesday
declined to lower bond after viewing the video.
The case will go to a Victoria County grand jury, but prosecutor
George Filley said no one should be subjected to such treatment.
Mrs. Nichols' daughter, Carol Shaffer, became suspicious a
few months ago when she found bruises on her mother, so she placed
a surveillance camera in a cabinet of her mother's room. There
was no audio on the 13-minute tape.
The alleged attack took place May 17 as Ms. Huff was changing
Mrs. Nichols' bed linen. The nurse's aide was arrested two days
later.
In the video aired Friday by KAVU, Mrs. Nichols could be seen
shaking violently during the rough treatment and trying to protect
herself.
"I still think my bond should be lowered to $10,000. I
don't think I'm a threat to society. I'm sorry for what I've seen
on the video," Ms. Huff told the judge Wednesday.
Mrs. Nichols is now living with her daughter and remains under
a doctor's care.
Linwood Place administrator Linda Koliba said the nursing home
is cooperating with the investigation. Send a Letter to
