Capitol Briefs

AUSTIN (AP) - A $10 million loan has been approved for the city of Corsicana to make improvements to its wastewater treatment system.

The Texas Water Development Board approved the loan. The board also approved:

- A $1.6 million loan to Idlewood Water Control and Improvement District No. 1 near Lufkin for wastewater collection and treatment system improvements.

- An $845,000 loan to the city of Quinlan for improvements to its wastewater system.

- A $350,000 loan to the South Plains Underground Water District, in Brownfield, for purchase of agricultural water conservation equipment.

- A $100,000 grant to the Brazos River Authority to research the benefits and cost of a large-scale animal waste management facility in Erath County.

Partial disability

AUSTIN (AP) - Cities and counties would be required to make a "reasonable effort" to accommodate an employee who experiences a partial disability during pregnancy under legislation filed in the Texas House.

Rep. Norma Chavez, D-El Paso, said her bill would apply to cases where a physician certified that a worker was partially disabled because of the pregnancy and unable to perform her duties in a permanent assignment.

A reasonable effort then would be required to temporarily reassign the employee to a job she is qualified to do.

"Although pregnancy is a wonderful thing, some women feel that they have to take a leave of absence when they become pregnant. This bill would mean that they could ask to be temporarily reassigned to another job," she said.

The bill is HB1503.

Crisis exemption

AUSTIN (AP) - The Texas Department of Agriculture has been given approval to issue a crisis exemption for use of Zorial Rapid 80 Herbicide to control grassy weeds in hybrid Bermuda grass pastures and hay meadows.

The exemption, announced Friday, was granted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Send a Letter to the Editor about This Story | Start or Join A Discussion about This Story
