Piece of Delta jet falls in field

CARROLLTON, Texas (AP) - An 18-foot-long piece of a Delta 767 jetliner fell out of the sky Thursday morning, landing in an empty field.

The plane, Delta Flight 691 from Orlando, Fla., landed safely at its destination, Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, said airport spokeswoman Angel Biasatti.

Emergency vehicles were standing by, but weren't needed and the plane taxied to the gate, she said.

The fallen piece was a section of the flap on the right wing of the jet, according to Rich Dilullo, director of customer service at Delta.

"We've talked to the pilot and the plane was in no danger," Dilullo said. "Just as a precautionary measure the crew requested the DFW emergency team, as is proper procedure."

No one was injured in the incident. There were 189 passengers aboard the plane.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the accident, Dilullo said.

Police dispatcher Teri Williams in the northern Dallas suburb of Carrollton said the mishap was reported at 8:44 a.m. by a civilian who saw the piece fall.

The only damage caused by the debris was to cable lines buried in the field, Williams said. Send a Letter to the Editor about This Story | Start or Join A Discussion about This Story
