State agency says it will watch DISD
DALLAS (AP) -- A warning to the Dallas Independent School District:
State Education Commissioner Mike Moses says he'll watch carefully
as the district gets back on its feet.
But DISD leaders say they're not worried about the scrutiny.
Acting Superintendent James Hughey and board president Kathleen
Leos said it's unlikely the state will intervene.
"In my experience with the commissioner," Hughey
said, "he wants every school district to take care of their
business. I don't think he's interested in trying to come in and
take over a local school (district)."
Ms. Leos said board members plan to meet with Moses and others
from the Texas Education Agency Monday.
"Obviously, the state has been watching, and they're aware
that there's a lack of financial oversight," she said.
"I think it's very necessary that the state watch the
governance issues and the management issues in the district."
In a Nov. 12 letter, Moses told board members and Hughey the
district's recent troubles have warranted his attention.
He warned the Texas Education Agency is monitoring where internal
and federal investigations into financial management and corruption
lead.
"I continue to be concerned with the inability of the
district to move toward more stability," he said.
So far this year, 14 district employees, including former Superintendent
Yvonne Gonzalez, have pleaded guilty to federal charges ranging
from overtime fraud to misapplying district funds.
