Detectives investigating double slaying awaiting
DNA results
CONROE, Texas (AP) - Montgomery County authorities are awaiting
the results of DNA tests on evidence they hope will advance their
investigation of the murders of two teen-age women.
Sheriff's Lt. Ted Pearce says Russell Wayne LaFleur, 18, who
was held for almost three weeks as a material witness in the case,
now is considered one of two suspects in the case.
Lafleur was held under $1 million bond as a material witness
to the slayings of Sarah Cleary, 17, and Misty Morgan, 18, before
bond was dismissed and he was released this week.
"Just because we let Lafleur go doesn't mean he's not
a suspect and won't be rearrested," Pearce said.
The bodies of Ms. Cleary and Ms. Morgan were found June 8 in
a wooded area north of Conroe. They had been burned beyond recognition
inside Ms. Morgan's car.
The women worked together and lived in north Harris County.
They were last seen leaving a nightclub about 2 a.m. June 8.
Pearce said he hoped the DNA results of evidence taken from
the crime scene would be in by mid-August.
"We're just waiting for DNA tests to come back, and that's
a very slow process," he said. "If the DNA comes back
positive, there's a good possibility we'll be able to make arrests."
Investigators say Lafleur lived in the Conroe area but moved
to Louisiana after the women were killed. He was arrested July
2 in Oberlin, La., in connection with the discovery of a Molotov
cocktail.
Authorities say Lafleur was released after his attorney assured
them Lafleur will be available for grand jury appearances or other
judicial proceedings. Send
