Nearby fire fails to smoke out shoppers
SAN ANTONIO (AP) - Sirens blared and the smell of smoke permeated
the shopping center - but that wasn't enough to dissuade shoppers
intent on making their first holiday purchases.
A fire was reported at 9:29 p.m. Thursday at Mailboxes Etc.,
just a few yards away from the popular department store and several
other smaller stores in the two-block North Side shopping center
open for Thanksgiving Day.
Firefighters arriving at the scene encountered hordes of shoppers
trying to find parking places, prompting a call to police for
help with traffic control.
"The smell is real evident," said a woman at Solo
Serve, who was too busy to give her name. "(But) nobody's
been paying attention."
The store sustained major fire and smoke damage. It was closed
when the fire broke out, and no one was believed to have been
inside the structure at the time.
Fire Department officials said no one was injured. No damage
estimates or cause of the fire was immediately available.Send
