Tilden residents party as flood waters roll down Frio River

TILDEN, Texas (AP) - Flooding on the Frio River didn't dampen spirits of some people in the little town of Tilden, about 70 miles south of San Antonio.

On Saturday about 40 residents gathered at Max's Cafe near the Frio River bridge for some barbecue and swimming.

"Everybody's really having a good time," McMullen County Commissioner Asa Farrer said as the group partied in 3 feet of water.

The river crested at 29.79 feet on Saturday, well above the record of 29.18 set during a flood in June of 1987.

Water was as deep as 6 feet in some areas of town. Portions of Texas Highway 16 resembled small rivers.

Last week's heavy rainfall in the Hill Country spurred the runoff into the Frio, according to John Metz, a forecaster with the National Weather Service in Corpus Christi.

The high river level should cause a significant increase in the water level at Choke Canyon Reservoir, but Metz had no estimate on what the level would reach.

"It's a flood of record; it's significant," he said.

But it wasn't bothering Sean Merrell, who stood in the deep water inside Max's.

"This isn't the first time this has happened. It's happened quite a bit," he said. "We've just been watching it."

People were able to predict the current flood and began taking precautions early, he said.

"Two days ago, we evacuated the motel in back (of the restaurant) and got the furniture out of there," said

The flooding wasn't going to get in the way of Saturday night's fun, he said.

"As the night goes on, there will be more people," he said. "We're just barbecuing, having fun.

"We'll just wait it out, that's all we can really do," he said.

Commissioner Farrer said the water didn't damage any houses.

"It got close," he said. "It's falling now, but very slowly." Send a Letter to the Editor about This Story | Start or Join A Discussion about This Story
