Elderly taking their best shot for glamour
calendar
DALLAS (AP) -- It was Dr. Malcolm Horne's first time in a red-feather
boa.
And the world would still be waiting if it weren't for a good
cause, to be designated later by residents of Marriott Brighton
Gardens retirement center.
Horne, 91, was one of about 40 residents who posed for pictures
Thursday to raise money for charity.
"My daughter wanted me to do a funny picture, but I've
been waiting so long, I don't think I'm in a funny mood,"
he said.
Once called to the camera, however, his spirits lifted. He
delighted other residents by vamping with the showgirl's accessory.
Also participating -- but remaining skeptical -- was Gennie
Vee McFarland, 93.
"I've never had a good picture of me in my life, except
one that was taken before I got married" in 1936, she told
The Dallas Morning News.
"I've never been nervous in my life," she said. "If
the president of the United States were in the room, I wouldn't
be nervous. I'm sure not going to be nervous about having my picture
taken."
Residents of the North Dallas assisted-living care facility
paid $5 for the photos, scheduled for printing in a 1998 calendar
that will be sold to friends and relatives.
Proceeds will go to a charity designated later by the residents,
65 to 96 years old, and staff.
"I wanted to do something that they can give to their
families," said Wayne McClellan, the center's director of
activities, who conceived the idea. "They love to do it.
They sort of revert to their childhood. They can dress up and
try on clothes."
Subjects were allowed to pick their calendar image from four
photos offered. Marjorie Folgeman, 87, looked at the images on
a portable screen and frowned.
"I don't like any of them," she said. "They
make me look like I've got rabbit teeth."
