Helmets a matter of choice, Bush says

AUSTIN (AP) - Gov. George W. Bush says motorcycle riders should have the choice of whether to wear helmets.

The Republican governor over the weekend signed a new law making the use of helmets optional for riders 21 and older.

"I think it is their decision to make," Bush explained Monday.

Supports of the measure, which repealed the mandatory helmet law for all motorcycle riders, argue that helmets actually cause more injuries than they prevent.

The new law, which takes effect Sept. 1, requires riders who choose not to wear a helmet to purchase extra health insurance. Send a Letter to the Editor about This Story | Start or Join A Discussion about This Story
