80-year-old inmate dies of head injuries from
fight
BEEVILLE, Texas (AP) - Authorities are investigating the death
of an 80-year-old prison inmate who died from injuries he suffered
in a fight with another inmate over the weekend.
Roger Castro Santos, who was serving time at the Texas Department
of Criminal Justice's Garza West unit near Beeville, fought with
a fellow inmate Friday evening and was knocked to the floor, prison
system spokesman David Nunnelee said.
Santos was flown to Spohn Memorial Hospital in Corpus Christi,
where he died Sunday morning of head injuries.
Santos, who arrived at the prison on Dec. 31, 1996, had been
sentenced to 12 years for indecency with a child and 15 years
for possession of a weapon. He was serving the sentences, for
convictions out of Bexar County, concurrently.
Prison officials were investigating Monday. They suspect a
26-year-old man serving 12 years for aggravated robbery was involved.
Officials did not know what started the fight, Nunnelee said.Send
