INS prepares for influx from south
EL PASO, Texas (AP) - Immigration officials will be beefing
up forces in West Texas and New Mexico in anticipation of the
traditional post-holiday rush of people returning from vacations
in Mexico and points south.
Besides increased traffic, authorities also are expecting a
surge in the use of falsified documents, Dan Kane, a spokesman
for the Immigration and Naturalization Service in El Paso, said
Monday.
The increase in false papers "usually happens around holiday
seasons, Christmas and Easter, because of the fact that undocumented
immigrants return to their families and then seek re-entry through
the ports," Kane said.
The INS will have additional inspectors at the ports of entry
from 8 a.m. to midnight beginning on Friday and continuing through
mid-January, Kane said.
Kane emphasized that the great majority of people crossing
during that time will be entering the United States legally.
He said 58 million people entered the country legally through
West Texas and New Mexico during the 1997 fiscal year, which ran
from Oct. 1, 1996, through Sept. 30.
But during the same period, officials also intercepted more
than 11,000 falsified documents, including border crossing cards,
resident alien cards and visas.Send a Letter to
