Mauro indicates he's leaning toward race for
governor
DALLAS (AP) - A day after Democratic Lt. Gov. Bob Bullock called
a bid for governor against incumbent George W. Bush "almost
a kamikaze" mission, Land Commissioner Garry Mauro suggested
he was up to the challenge.
"I love Bob Bullock and I've learned a lot from Bob Bullock,
but the last time he told me a guy named Bush couldn't be beaten
was when I asked him to help elect my friend Bill Clinton president,"
Mauro said Saturday.
In an interview Friday with The Associated Press, Bullock praised
the job Mauro has done in four terms at the General Land Office,
which manages state lands to generate revenue for public education,
protects natural resources in the Gulf of Mexico and administers
veterans' loan programs.
But he said that even if the GOP's Bush lacks an agenda for
Texas, his popularity will help him win a second term.
Mauro, who has been cagey about his intentions, acknowledged
Saturday that he likely will seek the Democratic nomination for
governor instead of another term as land commissioner. Saying
he's encouraged to run against Bush by what he hears from fellow
Texans - but stopping short of publicly committing to do so -
Mauro said he would announce his plans this fall.
"Texans are realizing that George Bush has failed to deliver
on the promises he made about people's daily lives," Mauro
said.
Bush's spokeswoman, Karen Hughes, did not return a telephone
call Saturday afternoon seeking comment. Send a Letter to
