Tearful molester begs for mercy after receiving 50-year sentence
HOUSTON (AP) - A 21-year-old man who molested his leukemia-stricken
stepsister has received a 50-year prison sentence.
Michael Cummings, who is married with two children, tearfully
begged state District Judge Michael McSpadden to reconsider his
decision.
"I'm not going to do this again. It's killing me every
day," said a shaking Cummings, after receiving the punishment
Friday. "Cut off what you want."
But McSpadden was unmoved.
"Your children will be better off without you," the
judge said.
Cummings, who has numerous theft convictions, pleaded guilty
on Dec. 3 to aggravated sexual assault of a child. The judge also
sentenced him to two years each for two theft charges.
The abuse was discovered when Cummings was in custody on a
theft arrest. In Cummings' wallet, police found a picture of the
naked little girl that apparently had been taken in a coin-operated
photo machine, according to court records.
Cummings' arm is seen in the photo, keeping the girl's pants
down.
Defense attorneys and the child's own mother had asked for
probation.
"If he goes to prison, she'll feel like she put him there,"
the girl's mother said.
"I feel like Michael knows he has done wrong."
The third-grader's cancer has been in remission since September.
