Police catch robber after he asks for shrimp cocktail

EDINBURG, Texas (AP) - An attempted bank robbery and hostage situation ended peacefully after the suspect made an unusual request of police - he demanded shrimp cocktail, crackers and bottled water.

The suspect was arrested after police delivered the food and found he was unarmed. No one was injured.

It started around 10 a.m. Wednesday when Sergio Trejo, 23, of Pharr, walked into the International Bank of Commerce and began acting suspiciously, said Edinburg police Sgt. Rey Ramirez. A bank teller questioned Trejo, who said he wanted a drink of water and then left.

Trejo returned 30 minutes later with his hand stuffed under his shirt, contending he was armed with a gun, Ramirez said. Trejo allegedly demanded money, then jumped over the bank counter, grabbed two female tellers and forced them toward the back of the bank where the vault is located.

Police were called to the scene and negotiations began. That's when Trejo asked police to bring him shrimp cocktail, crackers and a bottle of water.

When officers delivered the food, they discovered Trejo was not armed and arrested him, Ramirez said. When he was taken into custody, Trejo identified himself as Bill Clinton, police said.

Trejo was jailed pending charges on one count of aggravated robbery and two counts aggravated kidnapping.

Ramirez said some of Trejo's relatives told authorities that he is schizophrenic and had not taken his medication.

Paul Moffitt, executive vice president of International Bank of Commerce, said five employees and at least two customers were in the bank lobby when the situation occurred.

"(Trejo) mainly caused a lot of emotional stress with the employees more than anything else," Ramirez said. Send a Letter to the Editor about This Story | Start or Join A Discussion about This Story
