Senate Briefs
AUSTIN (AP) - State lawmakers have revived an effort to limit
the number of remedial courses university and community college
students can take.
A bill to limit those courses was thought dead earlier this
week after Rep. Arlene Wohlgemuth, R-Burleson, killed 52 bills
in revenge of the delay and subsequent death of a parental notification
abortion bill.
Sen. Teel Bivins, R-Amarillo, and sponsor of the university
bill, on Thursday said the measure could be added to another bill
related to higher education in Texas. He got permission from fellow
senators to do so, but the proposal still faces final House and
Senate votes.
University students would be limited to six state-funded remedial
courses, while those at community colleges could take no more
than nine under the bill, which is meant to give colleges and
universities an incentive to create better remedial programs.
The state currently spends about $75 million a year on remedial
and developmental courses at higher education institutions, according
to official analysis.
The remedial courses bill is SB729. It is being added to SB148.

AUSTIN (AP) - State lawmakers have sent to Gov. George W. Bush
a bill to keep information included on Texans' driver's licenses
from being posted on the Internet.
The measure, which Bush has said he supports, came up after
a woman notified Rep. Ruth Jones McClendon, D-San Antonio, that
her address - which she was trying to hide from her former husband
- was published on the Internet by a company that bought driver's
license information from the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Information from driver's licenses is public, but Bush and
lawmakers say it should not be so easy to get.
The driver's license information bill is SB1069. Send
