East Texas elementary school closed after illnesses

COLDSPRING, Texas (AP) - School officials closed a southeast Texas elementary school building Thursday after 30 percent of its students became ill with flu-like symptoms.

On Wednesday, 130 students and 15 teachers were absent or went home during the day, while 100 pupils were absent Thursday at Street Elementary School. The school is for pre-kindergarten through second grade.

Superintendent Lynn Redden said an airborne virus might be causing the stomach cramps and diarrhea. Tests are being done on the school's water. The school cafeteria food is not believed to be the source.

"We really feel like at this point that it is a viral-type problem," he said. "We certainly are hoping there is nothing in the water or in the building itself."

State health workers have been called to help.

Some 300 students who were not sick were sent across the playground Thursday to Cold Spring Intermediate School, which teaches grades three through five.

Coldspring, a San Jacinto County town, is 55 miles north of Houston. Send a Letter to the Editor about This Story | Start or Join A Discussion about This Story
