Woman, husband, 10-year-old son fight off intruder

DALLAS (AP) - With the help of her husband and 10-year-old son, a woman shot and killed a man who robbed them and had begun sexually assaulting her, police were told.

The assailant dived through a back window of the first-floor apartment and collapsed in a parking lot outside. The man, identified as Kedrian Myers, 18, died a short time later.

The 27-year-old woman told police that family members were getting ready for work and school about 6 a.m. Monday when the man barged through their front door and fired two shots, narrowly missing her husband.

With the couple's three young children hiding in a bedroom, the man demanded cash before turning his attention to her, the couple told police.

"Apparently, his original intent was a home-invasion robbery, but once he was in the house, he committed the sexual assault," homicide Sgt. Larry Lewis said.

The 10-year-old son came into the living room and saw his father jump on the attacker, who was raping his mother, the family told investigating officers.

Police were told the boy picked up the assailant's gun and fired one shot into the ceiling, apparently trying to scare him away. The woman grabbed the gun from him and shot the attacker once in the chest as he struggled with her husband, police were told.

Myers died shortly after arrival at Baylor University Medical Center, police said. The woman was taken to a hospital for an examination.

Police were unsure of Myers' residence, but said his mother lives around the corner from the apartment complex where the burglary and shooting occurred.

Myers had a criminal record, police said. He pleaded guilty last year to aggravated robbery and was sentenced to 20 years in prison. He was released after about six months. His court-appointed attorney persuaded a judge to reduce his sentence because it was his first felony offense as an adult, The Dallas Morning News reported.Send a Letter to the Editor about This Story | Start or Join A Discussion about This Story
