Spuds aplenty on highway

ROSENBERG, Texas (AP) - This spud's for you - and you, and you and you.

Local residents scooped up all the potatoes they could Monday afternoon after a whopping 51,000 pounds spilled from a truck headed to a Frito-Lay plant less than few miles away.

William Ernest Mervyn of Wisconsin was trying to park the truck along the shoulder of Texas 36 North when the back of the vehicle began to slide into a ditch, eventually turning over and dumping the potatoes, Rosenberg police Sgt. Richard Warstler said. / "The tail started slipping and then the entire truck went into the ditch," said Mervyn, embarrassed but not injured.

Mervyn apparently had become lost and made a wrong turn when exiting U.S. 59. He said he turned the truck around at the Fort Bend County Fairgrounds and was trying to park so he could ask for directions.

Texas Department of Transportation employees helped police and fire officials clean up the mess.

People who came to the scene were allowed to take as many spuds as they wanted. Several local charities also came by to load up. Send a Letter to the Editor about This Story | Start or Join A Discussion about This Story
