Book details 75 years of Texas Tech
LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) - The story of Texas Tech's rise from a
stroke of Gov. Pat Neff's pen to an institution with more than
25,000 students has been chronicled in a pictoral history book
released for the school's 75th anniversary.
The book, "75 Years of Greatness," records the university's
establishment in 1923 and its expansion into the state's fourth-largest
institution of higher learning.
Former Tech president Grover Murry said students should reflect
on their school's history, which is relatively short compared
to other major colleges and universities.
"I think it's extremely important that people who come
here understand the hardships those interested in an institution
of higher education in West Texas encountered in getting Texas
Technological College, as it was called back then."
Tech actually opened its doors in 1925. The book, written by
Lubbock Avalanche-Journal editors Doug Hensley and Norval Pollard,
chronicles the most important events in the university's history,
including:
-Induction into the Southwest Conference in 1956.
-Establishment of a law school in 1969.
-Groundbreaking for the medical school in 1973.
-NCAA championship in women's basketball in 1993.Send
