Bill would allow astronauts in space to vote

AUSTIN (AP) - Astronauts registered to vote in Texas could cast ballots from space under a bill forwarded to Gov. George W. Bush.

"Until recently, many people didn't realize that these astronauts who are serving their country in space were denied their fundamental right to vote," said Sen. J.E. "Buster" Brown, R-Lake Jackson, who sponsored the bill with Rep. Mike Jackson, R-LaPorte.

"I think many people will be jealous of these men and women. Not only are they leading our nation's space exploration, but now they will ... be able to vote and miss all the campaign commercials," Brown quipped Monday.

Last November, Houston astronaut John Blaha missed the early voting deadline. He was on the Russian space station Mir during the presidential election and wanted to vote from there.

But state law doesn't allow voting by electronic mail or other ideas floated on Blaha's behalf. He missed the election. Send a Letter to the Editor about This Story | Start or Join A Discussion about This Story
